Data Validation

Idealogic’s Glossary

Data validation is the act of checking data to ascertain that it is correct, complete and that it is in harmony with set standards. This entails checking on the correctness of the data that it is in the right form, and satisfies some conditions, constraints or formats that can go a long way in preventing data errors, or inputing wrong data, which may lead to wrong analysis or wrong decisions being made.

There are the range checks, format checks, and relationship checks which are applied in detecting and correcting of errors. The objective is to enhance data quality, to achieve the reliability and to generate confidence in the decision making that is based on the data. Data validation is also used extensively in data management, data base systems, data analysis, in the development of software and in data cleaning where data is cleaned for use in reporting, modeling or other analytical activities.
