Criticality Analysis

Idealogic’s Glossary

Criticality Analysis is a well-defined five-step approach whereby the criticality/ importance/ susceptibility of some of the sub-systems or components of a system can be assessed. Basically, it concentrates on measuring performance, dependability, and security specifications. Several elements are taken into consideration during criticality analysis; these are the importance of the function or service provided by the system element, the criticality level of the failure or interruption of the function or service, the connectivity of the system, and the requirements for risk control.

This paper offers companies direction on where to direct their resources; it also offers direction on where to search for solutions to the risks. The common ways that have been used to undertake criticality analysis include failure mode and effect analysis, fault tree analysis, and risk assessment matrixes. Some of these methods are those that are relevant to how weaknesses in the system can be identified and how the security of the systems can be enhanced.
