EMI

Idealogic’s Glossary

EMI is referred to the interference which disrupts the intended use of electrical circuitry or electronic appliances for their intended use. Both cases of radio frequency interference and EMI have the potential of causing harm to electronic devices up to a point of total failure.

EMI is common when electric and magnetic fields are in near vicinity and results in voltage spikes, something that is frequently seen in datacenter cables. These surges may cause the deletion of the contents stored on the Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) and the impact the Solid State Drives (SSDs).

How to Prevent EMI?

There are several countermeasures put in place in order to reduce the effects of electromagnetic interference. Here are three of the most effective methods:Here are three of the most effective methods:

Wire Shielding and Twisted Wires: EMI can be reduced by proper use of shielded wires which serve to create a barrier against the interference. The twisted wires provide another level of shield and, therefore, are very suitable for use in areas where EMI is a big concern. It is advised to call in a professional to do the installation since working with such wiring system can be dangerous if one is not a technician.

Adequate Grounding Practices: Make sure that the sensors as well as the devices are connected to the ground systems which are robust. As for the ground points do not place them in such a way that they are connected and choose a single point grounding to prevent power surges and to provide uniform protection against EMI.

Proper Cable Routing: Ideally, signal cables should be installed in a manner that they are not placed near electrical circuits or outlet because they also generate interference. Besides, it’s critical to avoid cable arrangements that are likely to interfere with the other electronic systems possessed by anyone.

Through these measures it is quite possible to minimize the chances of electromagnetic interference and hence safeguard your devices from possible damage.
