Demodulation

Idealogic’s Glossary

Demodulation is the process in which modulated carrier wave is used to get the original signal and this is the opposite of modulation. It is used in virtually all communication media, for instance, radio, television, wireless and digital data transmission. There are amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM) and phase modulation (PM) among the most frequently used. In demodulation process, the signal is further treated so as to recover the original waveform or data.

This involve rejection of the undesired signals and interference and strengthening of the desired signal by the aid of amplifiers and frequency converters. Demodulation circuits or algorithms depend on the modulation technique employed so as to demodulate the transmitted data effectively. With the current communication technologies such as wireless internet, cellular networks replacing the conventional broadcasting systems, demodulation is vital in signal demissing and demasking.
