Configuration item (CI) is a component or asset with location that is identified and controlled in such a way that any commentation of state change is systematic. CIs can be source code files, Program Executables, Libraries, Documents, and any other related files. In fact, each CI should have an identifier so that anyone equipped with it may access any precursor state of the program.

Some of the roles involve the following: Configuration Items act as vital elements in matters relating to change management. They provide a means of change control, determine how many of versions of the documentation shall be produced and changes tracking.This information gets stored in the software configuration baseline which gives the configuration status of the system as captured at a certain time. These items are closely controlled and recorded systematically and thus; CIs improve the reliability, maintainability, and quality of software products.
