Archive File

Idealogic’s Glossary

Archive file – a construction that allows not only to combine more than one file of different types and save it as a single file but may be used for compressing information. For such file formats, the use of archiving utilities is applied.

Included with the archives are folder structures, error correction, control data, comments, and other information. There is also a possibility to password encrypt the data in some of the archive formats.

Files encoded using archives are particularly useful for combining file system information and its meta-photonic amalgam into a single file that will be easier to store on a computer or distribute when using only files through file-only transmission channels /communication means such as emailing a folder. However, ‘archiving’, if the thought of in terms beyond its simple definition, is also applied usually in the distribution of software packages.
